Real Contentment: Is God Enough?

When we have a little we want more. When we have enough it’s still never enough. It’s a vicious cycle that keeps our minds constantly on what we want and how to get it instead of being content with what we have. It’s as if our desire for more is like a thirst that can never be quenched.

The truth is that even if God gave you all you ever wanted you still wouldn’t be happy. You’d still want more. And frankly it’s hard to stay content if you’re not keeping your eyes on God but on the things of this world. Every time you turn on the TV or radio, read a magazine, or watch a movie, we are bombarded with ads and messages that tell us we are incomplete unless we acquire more. More money, designer clothes, jewelry, a big and better car (don’t forget those “baller’s” rims) a bigger houses on a hill and on and on the list goes. Everyday we fall for the world’s lies.

We are so quick to quote “the world is not my home.” But we put down roots, and lose focus on that fact that this really is not our home, and instead of focusing on laying up Heavenly treasure we seek to amass as much earthly and temporary treasure as possible.  We all need to become like the Apostle Paul who tells us in Philippians 4:12 that he learned how to be content in every situation. We need to be the same way.


The Things of This World Can Never Satisfy You


But the things of this world will never fill you. Never. God wants us to be content with what we have but the world wants us to stay dissatisfied so we’ll buy more. Satan wants to distract us to keep our eyes off of God. And if you aren’t careful those things that you seek can easily become your god. Matthew 6:24 KJV reminds us that we can’t serve two masters. You can’t serve God and money (or things). They can end up owning you instead of you owning them and that is not profitable spiritually.

The world worships the material and sensual things of this world. But we have a God who can satisfy us to the deepest part of ourselves. As long as we have Him we have more than enough and THAT is enough. We have His love, mercy, grace, Salvation through His Son, a place ready for us in Heaven and blessings we can’t even imagine that we have yet to experience or are too great to be experienced in this life.

If you don’t get the mansion it’s okay. If you don’t get the car it’s okay. If you don’t get the designer clothes or the fame or the money, it’s still okay. It’s okay. If you see the world as God sees it. If you remind yourself of the fact that this world and all that’s in it will fall away, you will be on the road to real contentment. What will this stuff matter in eternity anyway? Absolutely nothing.


No Need To Go All John the Baptist


We must all learn to be content with a little and stop believing the lie that says more is better. It’s not. And you are not less than because you have less. The things of this world will NEVER be enough to satisfy you because only God can. I’m not telling you to be content with poverty. If you have real physical needs those needs need to be met. Neither am I saying you should sell all you have, go all John the Baptist and live in the woods, wearing rags and start eating locusts and honey. That’s insane. But if you have everything you need and you’re not living a life of extreme want and struggle, then be grateful for your blessings. The Apostle Paul reminds us in Hebrews 13:5 to not covet things, but to be content with what we have because God will never leave us or forsake us. Trust in that promise.

If you look to the world to give you what only God can, you will never be satisfied. That empty place you’re trying to fill up, only God can fill it. That thirst you have can only be quenched by Jesus Christ, the Fountain of Life. Stop relying on the things of this world and start relying on God. Learn to be content in God. Learn to be content in Christ. The riches that God has for you is far more valuable than all the money and material possessions in this world. When you can let go of your greed and covetousness, and rely solely on God to supply all of your needs, instead of seeking to fill your materialistic wants, you will find real contentment.
